1. The service
Barkline publishes tree-identification dossiers, a three-step identification key and a field guide at aspenes.top. The site is free to read and requires no account. We may add, change, suspend or remove any part of it at any time, including individual dossiers.
2. Permitted use
You may read, print and save the pages for your own use, and you may quote short passages with a credit and a link to the page you took them from. You may not scrape the site in bulk, republish whole dossiers, resell the content, mirror the site, or use the content to train or build a competing reference without written permission. Educational use in a classroom or a field course is welcome and needs no permission.
3. Accuracy, and the limits of an identification
This site is a reference work, not a professional service, and no identification made from it should be treated as authoritative. Tree identification depends on material we cannot see: the actual specimen, its age, its site, whether it is grafted, coppiced or shaded, and whether it is a hybrid. Species accounts describe the typical form of a species and will not describe every individual of it.
In particular, nothing here is a substitute for professional advice where there are legal, financial or safety consequences. This includes, without limitation: statutory tree protection and felling licences; protected species and habitat legislation; the assessment of hazardous or unstable trees; and the identification of any plant for human or animal consumption. Many trees and their fruits, seeds, leaves and sap are toxic. Do not eat anything on the basis of an identification made from this site.
4. No warranty
The site is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including as to accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose or uninterrupted availability. Errors are corrected when they are found and reported, but no guarantee is given that any page is free of them.
5. Intellectual property
The text of the dossiers, the morphology parameter sets, the generated figures, the identification key and the layout of this site are our copyright. The Latin binomials and the scientific facts stated are, of course, not. Figures may be reproduced without written permission for classroom and personal use, provided the site is credited; all other reproduction requires permission in advance.
6. Advertising
The site carries third-party display advertising. We do not endorse the advertisers and are not responsible for the products, services or claims they present. Advertising is not placed within the diagnostic content of a dossier, and we do not accept sponsored species accounts. Advertising delivered by Google is subject to Google's own terms, and personalisation is governed by our privacy policy.

Links to other sites are provided for reference only. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their availability, or their handling of your data.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage — including direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or economic loss — arising from your use of, or reliance on, this site or anything on it. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you have paid us, which for this site is nothing.
9. Privacy
Handling of personal data, cookies and advertising identifiers is described in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.
10. Changes to these terms
These terms may be revised. The "Last updated" date above changes whenever they are, and continuing to use the site afterwards means you accept the revision.
