If you are reporting an error
Include the species, the character you believe is wrong, and what you observed — a photograph and a location make the report far easier to act on. Reports about a leaf measurement are best accompanied by the measurement: how many teeth, how many vein pairs, and whether the leaf came from the sun side of the crown or from shade. Species accounts are corrected rather than quietly edited, and a correction that changes a figure is noted on the dossier.
If you want to reproduce something
The figures on this site are generated from parameters and are ours to license. Classroom and personal use is fine without asking. Anything commercial, any redistribution of more than a few plates, and any use in a printed field guide needs written permission first. Write to the address above describing the use, the audience and the territory.
If you are a publisher or advertiser
Advertising on this site is limited to standard display placements and is never placed inside a dossier's diagnostic content. We do not accept sponsored species accounts: a plate that described a tree differently because someone paid for it would be worthless as a reference.
If you are a researcher
We are happy to hear from anyone working on tree identification, morphology or phenology, and particularly from anyone who can offer better parameter values for a species than the ones currently printed. The five numbers under each figure are meant to be argued with.
If you are reporting a problem with the site
Tell us the page, the browser and what happened. Accessibility problems are treated as bugs, not as suggestions, and are fixed as soon as they are reproducible.
Post and legal
Barkline is published independently at aspenes.top. There is no telephone line and no walk-in office; email is the only channel and it is answered within a few working days. Anything that requires a formal notice should be sent to the same address and marked as such in the subject line.
